Ignored Allied International Credit for months thinking they'd stop... they didn't

Allied International Credit started calling me about 4 months ago over an old credit card charge off. I figured if I just ignored them, they would eventually give up and move on. Wrong.
They did not give up. They called more. Some days I would look at my missed calls and see 6, 8, even 10 calls from different numbers. They left voicemails that sounded more threatening each week. One said they were going to "pursue all legal remedies" which made me think I was about to get sued.
I was actually scared to check my mail. I stopped answering my phone completely, even for friends. It was affecting my sleep and my work.
What finally got me to act was a friend telling me that debt collectors cannot legally threaten things they don't actually intend to do. They also cannot call endlessly just to annoy you. That is considered harassment under federal law. I had no idea.
So I finally wrote down everything. Pulled my call logs for the past few months. Found a consumer law firm that only does this type of work. They explained that I might actually be the one who can claim compensation instead of just being scared all the time.
I signed a representation agreement. The lawyer handled everything from there. The calls have almost completely stopped. I cannot describe the relief.
Do not be like me and wait months because you feel ashamed or scared. Document everything from the first call. And do not believe their threats without fact checking first. You have more power than they want you to know.
